Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde is one of Peru's largest copper producers, operating a major open-pit mine near Arequipa. The company is majority-owned by Freeport-McMoRan and Sumitomo, with Buenaventura holding a minority stake. It is among the highest-volume copper producers in South America.
