Investing in China from abroad

A-shares, Hong Kong listings, ADRs, Stock Connect — the same company, three doors.

Three share classes, one economy

Chinese equity comes in three main forms. A-shares trade in Shanghai and Shenzhen in renminbi under mainland rules. H-shares (and other Hong Kong listings) trade in Hong Kong dollars under Hong Kong's rules. And a set of major Chinese companies trade in New York as ADRs. The same company can exist in more than one form, at different prices, with different investor bases.

Which form a 'China fund' holds is the single most important thing to check: mainland-only, Hong Kong-heavy, and ADR-heavy funds are meaningfully different products carrying different regulatory risks.

How foreigners actually get in

Individual foreign investors reach A-shares mainly through funds, or through brokers offering Stock Connect — the trading link that lets orders route from Hong Kong into eligible mainland shares without a mainland account. Institutional routes (the qualified-investor programs) matter for funds but not for individuals. Hong Kong listings and US ADRs, by contrast, are ordinary purchases at any broker.

Two structural caveats belong in any China note: many US-listed Chinese companies use variable-interest-entity structures — contractual claims rather than direct equity ownership — and the US-China dispute over audit inspection kept ADR delisting risk on the table for years. Neither has been fatal; both are real.

Index weight, and what this site shows

China is the heavyweight of the emerging tier, so even 'diversified' EM funds are substantially China decisions. The China page here lists the market snapshot, the largest listed companies, and the funds that reach it — check each fund's badge and scope to see which China it actually holds.
