Kuwait is a high-income, oil-dependent emirate located in the northwest corner of the Arabian Gulf, with petroleum and petroleum products accounting for roughly 90% of government revenues and the vast majority of export earnings. The country holds approximately 6–7% of global proven oil reserves and is a founding member of both OPEC and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Kuwait Vision 2035 (New Kuwait) outlines a long-term plan to diversify the economy, develop infrastructure, and expand the role of the private sector beyond hydrocarbons. The financial services sector, anchored by large Islamic and conventional banks, is the most significant non-oil segment by market capitalisation on Boursa Kuwait. Despite substantial sovereign wealth assets managed by the Kuwait Investment Authority, one of the world's oldest sovereign wealth funds, economic growth has been constrained by low oil prices, OPEC+ production cuts, and a slow pace of structural reform.

Foreign investors can access Boursa Kuwait equities through GCC-regulated brokers offering online trading accounts, or via international brokers with access to the Kuwait market. Non-Kuwaiti individuals and institutions are permitted to own shares in most listed companies, subject to foreign ownership limits set by individual companies (commonly 49%). No stamp duty or capital gains tax currently applies. Settlement is T+2. US-based investors most commonly gain exposure through GCC/MENA-focused ETFs rather than direct brokerage accounts.

Foreign nationals in Kuwait typically require employer or sponsor-based residency permits (Iqama). Kuwait does not permit freehold property ownership by non-GCC nationals. Long-term or permanent residency for expatriates is extremely limited; the government periodically reviews quotas on the expatriate workforce, which comprises more than 70% of the total population.
