Aperçu économique et sectoriel

Kuwait is a high-income, oil-dependent economy in the Arabian Gulf, with petroleum and petrochemical exports accounting for the vast majority of government revenues and merchandise exports. The country holds significant proven crude oil reserves and is a member of OPEC, with oil output around 2.45–2.49 million barrels per day as of mid-2025. The financial sector, anchored by large Islamic and conventional banks, is the dominant non-oil segment of the economy, while real estate, retail, and telecommunications also contribute meaningfully. Kuwait's sovereign wealth fund, the Kuwait Investment Authority, is one of the world's oldest and largest, managing assets globally on behalf of future generations. Long-term economic diversification beyond hydrocarbons remains a stated government priority under Kuwait Vision 2035.

Accès aux courtiers locaux

Foreign investors can access Boursa Kuwait equities through international brokers that support GCC markets (e.g. Interactive Brokers, Charles Schwab Global, Fidelity International Trading). Direct account opening with a local Kuwaiti brokerage is also possible for non-residents in many cases. The single dedicated US-listed single-country ETF is iShares MSCI Kuwait ETF (ticker: KWT). No Kuwaiti companies maintain a primary US ADR listing; exposure for most non-GCC investors is therefore via ETFs or direct local brokerage. Available markets, fees, and onboarding requirements differ by broker and by country of residence.

Subventions Long-term renewable residency (10 years, real estate or KDIPA business route); no citizenship pathway

Kuwait does not operate a traditional 'golden visa' programme. However, Amiri Decree No. 114 of 2024 (effective January 2025) introduced long-term investor residency provisions: qualifying investors may obtain a 10-year renewable residency permit via real estate ownership (typical property values KD 200,000–300,000, approx. USD 650,000–980,000, reviewed case by case) or by establishing a business licensed through the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority (KDIPA). No fixed minimum investment threshold is published; applications are reviewed individually. No citizenship-by-investment pathway exists.

Accès pour les investisseurs étrangers

Residency in Kuwait is primarily tied to employment sponsorship under the kafala system or to the newer investor residency routes introduced in 2025. Expatriates constitute a large majority of the private-sector workforce. There is no retirement or passive-income visa. The kafala system links most expatriate visas directly to an employer sponsor. Corporate and personal income taxes are not levied on individuals; a 15% corporate tax applies to foreign-owned entities. Arabic is the official language; English is widely used in business.
