Vietnam is a socialist-oriented market economy in Southeast Asia with a nominal GDP of approximately USD 476 billion in 2024, driven by robust export-oriented manufacturing, electronics, textiles, and footwear sectors. The country recorded real GDP growth of 7.09% in 2024, maintaining its position as one of Southeast Asia's fastest-growing economies. Key industries include electronics assembly (led by foreign multinationals such as Samsung and Intel), steel, food processing, real estate, banking, and agriculture. Vietnam is a major global exporter of electronics, garments, seafood, coffee, and rice, with the United States and China as its top trading partners. The Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE) serves as the primary equity market, with over 390 listed companies and a total market capitalisation of approximately USD 200 billion at end-2024.

Local broker access
Foreign investors may access Vietnamese equities through licensed local brokers such as SSI Securities, VNDirect, VNDIRECT, Mirae Asset Securities Vietnam, and Yuanta Securities Vietnam. Foreign ownership limits (FOL) apply: generally 49% for most sectors, 30% for banks, and sector-specific caps for certain industries. There are no US-based brokers offering direct Vietnamese stock trading; foreign access is primarily via local brokerage accounts or through US-listed ETFs. KYC/AML documentation and a Vietnamese securities trading account (through a licensed custodian) are required for direct market participation.

Investment visa / residency programme
Grants No formal investment-migration programme
Vietnam does not operate a formal golden visa or citizenship-by-investment programme. Foreign nationals may obtain temporary residence cards (TRC) for business, investment, or work purposes under the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam (2014, amended 2019). A 5-year TRC may be granted to investors meeting certain capital thresholds under the Law on Investment, but there is no structured residency-by-investment pathway analogous to golden visa programmes in other jurisdictions.

Foreign-investor access
Foreign nationals may reside in Vietnam on business visas, work permits, or temporary residence cards. Long-term residency (up to 5 years, renewable) is available for investors and business operators. Vietnam does not grant permanent residency or citizenship to foreign investors through investment alone. Property ownership by foreigners is restricted: foreigners may own apartments and houses for a 50-year term (renewable) in designated areas, subject to quotas.
