Wirtschafts- und Branchenüberblick
Bahrain is a small island nation in the Persian Gulf with a high-income, diversified economy anchored by financial services, aluminium smelting, petroleum refining, and tourism. It is one of the region's leading Islamic and offshore banking hubs, hosting hundreds of financial institutions regulated by the Central Bank of Bahrain. Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), the world's largest single-site aluminium smelter outside China, is a cornerstone of the industrial sector and the largest company listed on the Bahrain Bourse. The government's Economic Vision 2030 aims to reduce oil dependency and grow the private sector, with a particular emphasis on fintech, logistics, and tourism. The Bahraini dinar has maintained a fixed peg to the US dollar since 1980.

Lokaler Brokerzugang
The Bahrain Bourse (BHB) is accessible to foreign investors for listed equities, bonds, mutual funds, and Treasury Bills. Foreigners residing in Bahrain for one year or more may purchase up to 49% of a domestic joint-stock company's equities, though individual foreign ownership is capped at 1% of a company's issued capital. Foreign (non-resident) investors may freely trade bonds, mutual fund units, and warrants. International investors typically gain exposure to BHB-listed stocks through regional brokers or GCC-licensed intermediaries (e.g., regional arms of EFG Hermes, Arqaam Capital, Kuwait Financial Centre). Direct online access for non-GCC retail investors is limited; most participation is through institutional or regional accounts. No US-listed single-country Bahrain ETF currently exists; exposure is gained through frontier-markets ETFs with partial Bahrain allocation.

Förderprogramme Long-term renewable residency (no citizenship pathway)
Bahrain's Golden Residency Visa programme, launched in 2021 by the Ministry of Interior's Nationality, Passport & Residence Affairs (NPRA), grants long-term renewable residency to qualifying investors, property owners, retirees, and skilled professionals. Property-based eligibility requires ownership of real estate valued at a minimum of 200,000 BHD (approximately USD 530,000). Existing residents who have lived continuously in Bahrain for five years with average monthly income of at least 2,000 BHD (approx. USD 5,300) are also eligible. Non-resident retirees must demonstrate at least 4,000 BHD (approx. USD 10,600) per month in income. Highly talented individuals: including PhD holders, accredited entrepreneurs, inventors with patents, and award-winning artists, may also qualify. Over 10,000 Golden Visas had been issued by end-2024 to holders from over 100 nationalities. There is no citizenship pathway through this investment-migration programme; Bahraini citizenship is granted only through traditional naturalization or royal decree.

Zugang für ausländische Investoren
Bahrain is considered one of the more accessible Gulf states for expatriates and foreign professionals. There is no personal income tax. The cost of living is generally lower than Dubai or Abu Dhabi. Foreign nationals can own freehold property in designated areas. The country operates a Flexi-Permit allowing expatriates to work for multiple employers, and a self-sponsorship visa exists for financially independent individuals. English is widely spoken in business. A robust financial services ecosystem and a relatively liberal social environment make it attractive for international workers and entrepreneurs.
