Bahrain is a small island nation in the Arabian Gulf with a high-income, diversified economy anchored by financial services, aluminium smelting, petroleum refining, and tourism. The country hosts one of the most developed financial sectors in the Middle East, serving as a regional hub for Islamic banking and offshore banking. Hydrocarbons account for approximately 14–15% of GDP and around 60% of government revenues, though Bahrain has pursued economic diversification more aggressively than some Gulf peers. The Bahrain Bourse, established in 1987, is a frontier-classified exchange listing around 41 domestic companies across financial, industrial, and services sectors. The Bahraini Dinar maintains a long-standing fixed peg to the US Dollar at 1 BHD = 2.659 USD.

Foreign investors may trade on the Bahrain Bourse through licensed local brokers. The exchange operates a Central Securities Depository (CSD) and settlement is T+2. Non-Bahraini investors (including institutions and individuals) are generally permitted to own shares in most listed companies, with some sector-specific ownership caps. There is no capital gains tax on securities trading for non-residents. Dividends may be subject to withholding considerations depending on investor jurisdiction. Access via international brokers is limited; most foreign participation comes through regional or local brokerage accounts. No US-listed Bahrain-specific ETFs with single-country exposure currently exist; Bahrain may appear as a small weight in broad frontier-market or MENA-regional ETFs.

Hibeler Long-term residency permit (renewable; not citizenship)
Bahrain introduced a Premium Residency permit in 2021 allowing foreign nationals to obtain long-term residency. The self-funded category requires a minimum bank deposit of BHD 100,000 (approx. USD 265,900) maintained in Bahrain. The property ownership category requires owning real estate worth at least BHD 200,000 (approx. USD 531,800). A specialist/professional category is also available for qualified individuals with a Bahraini employer or qualifying income. The permit is renewable and does not automatically confer citizenship.

Bahrain has no personal income tax and offers a relatively open environment for expatriates. The country has a well-developed financial services sector and is known for lower cost of living compared to Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) manages work permits and residency. The Flexi Permit allows individuals to live and work freely in Bahrain without a sponsoring employer. GCC nationals move freely; other nationalities require standard visa or residency permit processes.
