Economy & industry overview
Botswana is a landlocked upper-middle-income economy in southern Africa whose prosperity has historically been anchored in diamond mining, which contributes a significant share of export revenues and government income. The country has experienced strong long-run growth since independence in 1966 but faced a sharp slowdown in 2024 due to weak global diamond demand and rising lab-grown diamond competition. Beyond diamonds, the economy includes financial services, tourism (particularly wildlife and safari), beef processing, and a growing telecommunications sector. Botswana maintains one of sub-Saharan Africa's more stable macroeconomic frameworks, with relatively low public debt and a prudent fiscal policy, though high structural unemployment and income inequality remain persistent challenges.

Relocation & residency
Investment visa / residency programme
Grants No formal investment-migration programme
Botswana does not operate a formal golden visa or citizenship-by-investment programme. Foreign nationals may apply for residence permits under standard immigration categories, including investor permits for those establishing or investing in qualifying businesses in Botswana under the Immigration Act. The Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) facilitates investment facilitation services but there is no published minimum threshold specifically marketed as a residency-by-investment pathway.

Foreign-investor access
Botswana offers a relatively stable rule-of-law environment and low crime rate by regional standards. Foreign investors may obtain business/investor residence permits through BITC. The country uses English as an official language alongside Setswana. Cost of living in Gaborone is moderate by African capital standards. Healthcare and international schooling options are limited compared to larger regional hubs.
