Botswana is a landlocked upper-middle-income country in Southern Africa whose economy is heavily anchored in diamond mining, which accounts for approximately 80% of export revenues and a significant share of government receipts. The services sector contributes roughly 70% of GDP and includes retail, financial services, and a growing tourism industry centred on wildlife and ecotourism. Real GDP contracted an estimated 0.7–0.9% in 2025, driven by a 24% decline in mining output amid weak global diamond demand and the structural shift toward lab-grown stones. The country maintains strong institutions, low public debt relative to peers, and is consistently ranked the least corrupt country in mainland Africa. Diversification away from diamond dependence into financial services, tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing remains a central policy priority.

Foreign-investor access

Foreign nationals wishing to reside in Botswana typically require a work permit or residence permit issued by the Department of Immigration. Permit categories include employment, investor/entrepreneur, and retired persons. The process is administered by the Ministry of Home Affairs. Botswana citizens enjoy freedom of movement within SADC but the country does not offer a passive-investment residency route.
