Economy & industry overview

Kenya is the largest economy in East Africa, with a nominal GDP of approximately $124.5 billion (2024, World Bank). The economy is diversified across agriculture (including tea, coffee, and horticulture), services (particularly financial services and ICT), manufacturing, and tourism. Nairobi serves as a regional hub for multinational corporations and financial institutions, underpinned by a dynamic fintech ecosystem led by mobile money platform M-Pesa. Kenya is a member of the East African Community (EAC), the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and COMESA. The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), founded in 1954, is the principal stock exchange and one of the oldest and largest in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Foreign investors can trade NSE-listed equities through CMA-licensed stockbrokers and dealing members. There are no major restrictions on foreign ownership of NSE equities, though some companies carry foreign ownership caps (typically 75%). Settlement is T+2. Capital gains on NSE equity transactions are not taxed in Kenya. Dividend withholding tax is typically 5% for residents and 15% for non-residents. International investors may also gain exposure via US-listed ETFs such as VanEck Africa Index ETF (AFK) and iShares MSCI South Africa ETF (EZA does not include Kenya; AFK is the primary vehicle). No US-listed ADRs for Kenyan companies exist as of 2025.

Foreign-investor access

Kenya issues Class G Investor Permits for foreign nationals establishing or investing in a business in Kenya. Permit holders may reside and work in Kenya for the duration of the permit. Permanent residency and citizenship are available through separate, longer-term processes under the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act. No passive real-estate or bond-investment residency pathway exists as of 2025.
