Economy & industry overview

Botswana is one of Africa's most stable and prosperous upper-middle-income economies, underpinned by strong democratic institutions and prudent macroeconomic management. The economy is heavily dependent on diamonds, which account for roughly 80% of export earnings and approximately one-third of GDP, making it highly sensitive to global diamond market conditions. The government has pursued diversification into tourism, financial services, and manufacturing to reduce this concentration risk. Botswana maintains a sovereign wealth fund (the Pula Fund) and has historically kept public debt low, though fiscal pressures have widened in 2024–2025 due to declining diamond revenues. Real GDP contracted an estimated 3.0% in 2024 and a further 0.7% in 2025, driven by reduced diamond output, with recovery projected at modest rates in 2026–2027.

Local broker access

The BSE is a relatively illiquid frontier market with limited daily turnover. Foreign investors may access BSE-listed stocks through licensed local stockbrokers authorised by the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (NBFIRA). Online direct brokerage platforms with foreign access are limited; most international investors route orders through regional brokers with BSE relationships or gain exposure via Africa-focused ETFs. Settlement is in Botswana Pula via the Central Securities Depository (CSD Botswana).

Relocation & residency

Investment visa / residency programme

Grants No formal investment-migration programme

Botswana does not operate a formal Golden Visa or citizenship-by-investment programme. Foreign nationals may apply for residence permits under the Immigration Act on grounds of employment, business investment, or retirement, but there is no dedicated investment-migration scheme with a minimum capital threshold granting automatic residency or citizenship.

Foreign-investor access

Foreign nationals can apply for a work permit or investor residence permit through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services. There is no streamlined residency-by-investment track; applicants must demonstrate a substantive business operation or employment contract. The country uses the Botswana Pula (BWP) and has a cost of living generally lower than South Africa's major cities. English is an official language alongside Setswana.
