Aperçu économique et sectoriel

Sri Lanka is a developing mixed economy in South Asia with a GDP of approximately $99 billion (2024), driven primarily by services (approximately 59%), industry (27%), and agriculture (7.5%). Key export earners include textiles and apparel, tea and spices, IT/BPO services, rubber products, and gems and jewellery, with remittances from overseas workers also a major foreign-exchange source. The country experienced a severe economic and debt crisis in 2022 but undertook an IMF-supported restructuring programme and returned to positive GDP growth of 5.0% in FY2024 and FY2025. Tourism is a significant and recovering sector, while telecommunications and banking are well-developed relative to regional peers. Inflation fell sharply from crisis-era highs to approximately 1.6% by early 2026 following tight monetary policy.

Accès aux courtiers locaux

Foreign investors may trade CSE-listed securities through licensed stockbrokers registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC). The CSE operates a Central Depository System (CDS) requiring a CDS account. Foreign ownership limits apply to certain sectors including banking and plantations. Repatriation of capital and earnings is generally permitted for eligible foreign investments. No major global retail brokers provide direct CSE access; investors typically use local licensed brokers or access Sri Lanka exposure via regional or frontier-market ETFs listed in the US.

Visa d'investissement / programme de résidence

Subventions Long-term residence visa (renewable, BOI-approved investors); no citizenship-by-investment pathway

Sri Lanka does not operate a formal Golden Visa or Citizenship-by-Investment programme in the conventional sense. The Board of Investment (BOI) of Sri Lanka offers long-term residence visas (up to 5 years, renewable) to qualifying foreign investors who invest a minimum of USD 250,000 in approved sectors. This residence visa does not confer a path to citizenship solely through investment. A separate 'Resident Guest' scheme allows certain categories of retired or high-net-worth foreign nationals to reside in Sri Lanka. There is no programme granting citizenship purely through financial investment.

Accès pour les investisseurs étrangers

Foreign nationals may apply for a Resident Guest visa or BOI investor visa. Sri Lanka requires all foreign nationals to obtain visas; an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is available for short stays from most nationalities. Long-term residents cannot vote or own freehold land (apartments in condominiums above the 4th floor are an exception under the Apartment Ownership Law). The cost of living is moderate by regional standards. Healthcare infrastructure varies significantly between Colombo and rural areas.
