Economy & industry overview

Bulgaria is a lower-middle-income EU member state in southeastern Europe with a diversified economy anchored in manufacturing, energy, tourism, and a growing IT and business-process outsourcing sector. It adopted the euro on 1 January 2025, replacing the Bulgarian lev that had been pegged to the euro since 1999 under a currency board arrangement. Key export goods include refined petroleum, copper, electricity, wheat, and pharmaceutical products. The country benefits from competitive labour costs and EU structural and cohesion funds, while facing long-term demographic headwinds from an ageing and shrinking population. Real GDP growth reached 3.4% in 2024, among the stronger performances in the EU, supported by robust private consumption and investment.

Local broker access

Direct retail access to the Bulgarian Stock Exchange (BSE) is available through Bulgarian licensed investment intermediaries regulated by the Financial Supervision Commission (FSC). Most major international retail brokers (e.g., Interactive Brokers) do not provide direct BSE order routing as of 2024–2025. The BSE EuroBridge segment, launched in July 2024 in cooperation with Deutsche Börse, enables dual-listing of selected Bulgarian companies on XETRA, broadening access for European investors. US-based investors can access regional exposure via Eastern European ETFs; no US-traded single-country Bulgaria ETF exists.

Relocation & residency

Investment visa / residency programme

Grants Long-term residency (renewable); citizenship route abolished in 2022

Bulgaria abolished its Citizenship by Investment (golden passport) programme in March 2022 following sustained EU pressure. A residency-by-investment route for non-EU nationals remains available under the Law on Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria, whereby a significant investment (e.g., in Bulgarian government bonds, registered companies, or designated areas) can qualify a third-country national for long-term residency. No direct citizenship-by-investment pathway currently exists.

Foreign-investor access

EU citizens may reside and work in Bulgaria without restriction. Non-EU nationals may apply for long-term residency through investment or employment routes regulated by the Ministry of Interior. Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2025. The cost of living is among the lowest in the EU, and Sofia has a growing expat and digital-nomad community. Bulgaria is a Schengen Area member as of 1 January 2024.
