Economy & industry overview
Slovakia is a small, open, export-driven economy in Central Europe and a member of the European Union and Eurozone. The economy is heavily oriented toward manufacturing, particularly automotive production, with Slovakia being one of the world's largest per-capita producers of passenger cars. Key industries include automotive assembly and parts, machinery, electronics, chemicals, and energy, including nuclear power. Slovakia adopted the euro in 2009 and benefits from EU single-market access; its trade is dominated by intra-EU flows, especially with Germany, Czechia, Hungary, and Poland. The Bratislava Stock Exchange (BSSE) is small relative to GDP, and most large Slovak enterprises are subsidiaries of foreign multinationals rather than independently listed domestic companies.

Local broker access
Slovak equities listed on the BSSE are accessible primarily through European brokers with access to regulated Central European markets (e.g. Interactive Brokers, Saxo Bank, some Czech and Slovak retail brokers). Direct retail access from the US is limited; the exchange is small and illiquid. Many significant Slovak-domiciled companies are subsidiaries of foreign multinationals and are not independently listed on the BSSE. US investors seeking Slovak exposure typically do so via broad Eastern European or EU-wide ETFs.
Global brokers with foreign-market access
- Interactive Brokers — Direct access to 90+ markets worldwide, including many emerging exchanges.
- Saxo Bank — Multi-market access across Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
- Charles Schwab (Global) — Foreign ordinary shares on select markets; US-listed ADRs and ETFs.
- Fidelity International Trading — International stock trading on a number of developed and emerging markets.

Relocation & residency
Foreign-investor access
Slovakia does not operate a formal golden visa or citizenship-by-investment programme. Non-EU nationals can obtain temporary residence permits through business formation (establishing a Slovak limited liability company, s.r.o., with minimum share capital of €5,000, or registering as self-employed), provided the business is genuinely operational. Property purchase alone does not confer a residence permit. After five years of continuous legal residence, non-EU nationals may apply for permanent residence; citizenship may be pursued after additional years of residence, subject to language and integration requirements.
