Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and the world's 17th-largest by nominal GDP, underpinned by a population of roughly 288 million people. The economy is driven by natural resources including coal, palm oil, and nickel, alongside a large and growing domestic consumer market. Key industries include banking and financial services, telecommunications, petrochemicals, agriculture, manufacturing, and digital technology. The country has attracted significant foreign direct investment in its downstream nickel and battery-materials sector, positioning itself in global electric vehicle supply chains. Macroeconomic conditions have been broadly stable, with inflation near 2% and unemployment below 5%.

Foreign investors can access Indonesian equities through international brokers offering IDX market access (e.g., Interactive Brokers, Saxo Bank) or through local licensed securities firms regulated by the Financial Services Authority (OJK). Direct IDX accounts require a local custodian and sub-registry account. US-based investors commonly gain exposure via the iShares MSCI Indonesia ETF (EIDO) or through ADR/OTC instruments. Capital gains on equities for non-residents are generally subject to a final withholding tax; dividends are subject to a 20% withholding tax for non-residents (reducible under applicable tax treaties). Repatriation of funds is generally permitted subject to standard documentation.

Akses investor asing

Foreign nationals can reside in Indonesia under the Second Home Visa (E33G) introduced in 2022, which requires proof of sufficient funds or qualifying property purchase. Bali and Jakarta are the most popular destinations for expatriates. Indonesia applies restrictions on foreign ownership of land (freehold title is reserved for Indonesian citizens); foreigners may hold property via Hak Pakai (right-of-use) title or through long-term lease arrangements. A tax identification number (NPWP) is required for most financial and administrative activities.
