Mali is a landlocked West African nation with a developing, low-income economy heavily reliant on agriculture, gold mining, and cotton production. Agriculture employs the majority of the rural population and contributes significantly to GDP, while gold is the dominant export commodity and a key source of government revenue. The economy recorded approximately 5.0% real GDP growth in 2024, driven by agricultural output, extractive industries including nascent lithium production, and services. Mali is among the least-developed countries in the world, classified as a Heavily Indebted Poor Country, and remains heavily dependent on foreign aid and remittances. Ongoing political instability under a military junta and regional security challenges continue to constrain private-sector development and foreign direct investment.

Mali does not operate a standalone national stock exchange. Malian companies are listed on the BRVM (Bourse Régionale des Valeurs Mobilières), the regional exchange for the eight UEMOA member states, headquartered in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Access to BRVM-listed equities is typically facilitated through BRVM-licensed broker-dealers (Sociétés de Gestion et d'Intermédiation, SGIs) operating in UEMOA member states. International retail investors generally have limited direct access; some regional and frontier-market fund managers provide indirect exposure. No US-listed ETF offers single-country Mali equity exposure, and no Mali-domiciled company has a US ADR.

Mali is governed by a military junta following coups in 2020 and 2021. Multiple governments, including those of the United States, United Kingdom, France, and the European Union, maintain elevated travel advisories for Mali due to active armed conflict, terrorism, and kidnapping risks, particularly outside Bamako. Foreigners residing or working in Mali are subject to Malian labour and immigration law; no streamlined investor-residency pathway exists.
