Niger is a landlocked, low-income West African nation whose economy rests primarily on subsistence agriculture, uranium mining, and petroleum exports. Agriculture employs approximately 87% of the labour force, while uranium has historically been the country's primary hard-currency earner. A 2023 military coup disrupted relations with Western partners and led to the suspension of some foreign aid and development financing, creating near-term fiscal pressure. The country remains one of the world's least-developed economies, with a nominal GDP of approximately $19.7 billion in 2024 and a GDP per capita of around $693. Long-term growth prospects are linked to oil pipeline revenues, uranium demand, and agricultural productivity, though security conditions across the Sahel remain a significant constraint.

Niger participates in the regional BRVM exchange as a UEMOA/WAEMU member state. There are no domestically headquartered companies with a meaningful BRVM listing. Investors seeking equity exposure to West Africa's CFA-zone frontier markets may access the BRVM through brokers authorised as Sociétés de Gestion et d'Intermédiation (SGI); SGI Niger received AMF-UMOA authorisation in 2024. Niger requires a visa for most nationalities. Following the July 2023 military coup, several Western governments issued travel advisories recommending against travel to Niger. The country has no special investor or retiree residency category. ECOWAS free-movement protocols technically apply to ECOWAS citizens but practical implementation has been affected by regional political tensions.
