Economy & industry overview

Senegal is a lower-middle-income economy and one of West Africa's most stable democracies, with GDP of approximately $32.3 billion in 2024. The economy is anchored by services, agriculture, fishing, phosphate and gold mining, construction, and an emerging oil and gas sector following offshore discoveries. Senegal became an oil and gas producer in 2024 with the inauguration of the Sangomar offshore oilfield and the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim LNG project, adding a new growth pillar. Tourism, remittances, and a growing digital-services sector also contribute materially to output. The country is a member of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) and shares the CFA franc, providing monetary stability anchored to the euro.
