South Africa is the most industrialised economy in Africa, with a diverse structure spanning mining, financial services, manufacturing, retail, and telecommunications. The country is the world's largest producer of platinum group metals and a major producer of gold, chromium, and coal, underpinning a resource-intensive export sector. The financial services sector is sophisticated by emerging-market standards, with the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) being the largest stock exchange on the African continent. Structural challenges include persistently high unemployment (approximately 32%), significant inequality, infrastructure constraints in logistics and energy, and elevated public debt levels. The Government of National Unity, formed in mid-2024, stabilised investor confidence and GDP growth is projected to gradually accelerate toward 1.5% in 2025–2026.

Foreign nationals relocating to South Africa may apply for a variety of visa categories including business visas, critical skills visas, and the financially independent person permanent residency category. South Africa has a well-developed banking system, private healthcare infrastructure, and internationally recognised legal system based on Roman-Dutch and English common law. The South African Revenue Service (SARS) taxes residents on worldwide income; new arrivals should seek qualified tax and immigration legal advice regarding residency determination and the financial emigration process.
