There are no general foreign-ownership caps on JSE-listed equities; foreign investors may freely hold shares in most listed South African companies. Sector-specific limits apply in certain strategic industries (e.g., private security limited to 49% foreign ownership). South Africa's exchange control regulations, administered by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) through authorised dealers, govern capital flows in and out of the country; transactions above certain thresholds require SARB approval, though the National Treasury has progressively liberalised these rules. Foreigners residing outside South Africa can open a local brokerage account with a JSE member broker (a full list is available on jse.co.za) by providing standard KYC documentation; capital repatriation of profits and dividends is generally permitted.
