South Africa is the most industrialised economy on the African continent and a member of the G20, with nominal GDP of approximately $400 billion in 2024. Its economy is diversified across mining and resources (gold, platinum, coal, diamonds), financial services, manufacturing, retail, and telecommunications. The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) is Africa's largest bourse by market capitalisation, accounting for roughly 60% of total African equity market value. Structural challenges including persistently high unemployment (above 32%), infrastructure constraints — particularly in electricity supply — and slow GDP growth (0.6% in 2024) continue to weigh on the economy.
