Malta is a small, open, high-income EU member-state economy in the central Mediterranean, heavily oriented toward services, which account for roughly 87% of GDP. Key pillars include tourism, financial services, iGaming and online gaming, information technology, and aviation services, complemented by a pharmaceuticals and electronics manufacturing base. The economy has posted among the fastest growth rates in the EU, averaging around 6.6% real growth per year over the past decade, driven by robust domestic consumption and a thriving tourism sector. Malta adopted the euro in 2008 and benefits from full EU single-market access. Unemployment remains among the lowest in the EU at around 3.0–3.4%, and GDP per capita is well above the EU average in PPP terms.

The Malta Stock Exchange (MSE) uses the Xetra electronic trading platform. Most MSE-listed equities are lightly traded with low liquidity and wide bid-ask spreads, and the market is dominated by domestic retail investors. Foreign investors may open accounts with Maltese licensed stockbrokers and investment services firms regulated by the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA). There are no dedicated single-country Malta ETFs traded in the US. Malta-listed shares are not accessible via major US retail brokerage platforms and typically require engagement with a local or EU-based broker. No Malta-incorporated companies have US ADR listings.

Malta is an English-speaking EU member state with a well-established legal framework based on English common law and Napoleonic civil law traditions. EU nationals have the right to reside freely; non-EU nationals may apply under the MPRP for permanent residency. Malta offers a Global Residence Programme and other tax-residence schemes for non-domiciled individuals under which a flat annual minimum tax applies. The country has a warm Mediterranean climate, high-quality private healthcare, and international schools. Cost of living, particularly property prices, has risen significantly in recent years due to strong demand.
