Economy & industry overview
Mauritius is an upper-middle-income island economy in the Indian Ocean that has successfully diversified from a monocrop sugar base into financial services, tourism, ICT/BPO, and manufacturing over several decades. Financial and business services contributed approximately 13.4% of GDP in 2024, while tourism generated over $2 billion in annual foreign-exchange earnings. Real GDP grew by an estimated 3.2% in 2025, supported by continued strength in services, though growth has moderated from the post-pandemic rebound peak. The Stock Exchange of Mauritius (SEM) lists around 88 securities across its Official Market and Development & Enterprise Market (DEM), with a total Official Market capitalisation of approximately MUR 362.8 billion (roughly $7.8 billion) as of mid-2026. Mauritius is classified as a frontier market by MSCI and serves as a prominent financial hub and investment gateway for Africa.

Local broker access
The SEM operates a CDS (Central Depository System) for settlement. Foreign investors must use a licensed investment dealer (stockbroker) to open a CDS account and place orders. Settlement is currently T+3, with plans to move to T+2. Local licensed brokers include MCB Stockbrokers (part of MCB Capital Markets), SBM Securities, Swan Securities, and several others listed on the SEM website. No US-listed ADRs exist for Mauritian companies. International access via Interactive Brokers is available; US-domiciled retail brokers may restrict accounts once a Mauritius address is registered. The iShares FM ETF (formerly the main single-instrument frontier market vehicle with Mauritius exposure) was liquidated in January 2025.
Global brokers with foreign-market access
- Interactive Brokers — Direct access to 90+ markets worldwide, including many emerging exchanges.
- Saxo Bank — Multi-market access across Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
- Charles Schwab (Global) — Foreign ordinary shares on select markets; US-listed ADRs and ETFs.
- Fidelity International Trading — International stock trading on a number of developed and emerging markets.

Relocation & residency
Investment visa / residency programme
Grants Permanent residency (real estate route) or Residency (premium Golden Visa pathway)
Mauritius offers two main investment-migration pathways. The traditional route grants permanent residency through investment of at least USD 375,000 in an approved real estate scheme (IRS, RES, PDS, Smart City, Invest Hotel Scheme, or G+2 apartments); only one day of physical presence per year is required to maintain this status. In May 2026, Mauritius announced plans for a new premium Golden Visa targeting high-net-worth individuals requiring a USD 1 million commitment (within 12 months) in qualifying sectors such as fintech, AI, biotechnology, renewable energy, and global treasury, with fast-track processing of approximately 5 working days.
Minimum investment: $375.00K

Foreign-investor access
Foreign investors face virtually no restrictions on portfolio investment in SEM-listed companies, except that approval is required for acquisitions exceeding 15% of shares in a sugar company. To trade on the SEM, foreigners must open a CDS (Central Depository System) account through a licensed stockbroker and fulfill full KYC requirements under Mauritius anti-money laundering law. Local brokers include MCB Stockbrokers, SBM Securities, and Swan Securities. US-based retail platforms (Schwab, Fidelity) may restrict account access after relocation to Mauritius due to FATCA compliance rules; Interactive Brokers is the most widely used platform for expatriates. There is no capital gains tax in Mauritius, and the income tax rate is flat, making the jurisdiction attractive for international investors and high-net-worth individuals.
