Tanzania is a lower-middle-income economy in East Africa and the second largest economy in the East African Community, with a nominal GDP of approximately $87 billion in 2025. Growth is broad-based, driven by agriculture, mining, construction, financial services, and a recovering tourism sector. The country holds significant natural resources including gold, natural gas, gemstones, and agricultural commodities such as coffee, tea, cashews, and tobacco. The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE), established in 1998, serves as the primary capital market, with a domestic market capitalisation reaching a record TZS 15.56 trillion by end-2025. Tanzania operates under Vision 2025 development goals targeting middle-income status, with long-term planning now extending under Vision 2050.

Trading on the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange is conducted through licensed dealing members (stockbrokers) regulated by the Capital Markets and Securities Authority (CMSA) of Tanzania. Foreign investors may participate in the DSE subject to CMSA regulations; some counters impose foreign ownership limits. Settlement is T+3. No major international retail brokerage platforms currently provide direct DSE trading access; investors typically engage local licensed brokers. Notable licensed dealing members include Vertex International Securities, Solomon Stockbrokers, and Orbit Securities.

Foreign nationals may obtain residence permits under Class A (investor/business), Class B (employee), or Class C (specific activities) categories administered by the Tanzania Immigration Services Department. Class A investor permits require evidence of qualifying business investment in Tanzania. There is no published minimum investment threshold for a standard residency-by-investment pathway, and no programme that automatically grants permanent residency or citizenship in exchange for a passive financial investment.

Zanzibar operates a separate administration and has periodically promoted its own investor-focused residency schemes.
