Greece is a high-income, open economy in Southern Europe and a member of the European Union and the Eurozone. Its economy is driven primarily by services, with tourism and shipping being the two most distinctive pillars; Greece controls the world's largest merchant fleet by deadweight tonnage. The financial sector is anchored by four systemic banks that underwent significant restructuring and recapitalization following the sovereign debt crisis of the 2010s. Industry contributes roughly 18% of GDP, with petroleum refining, aluminium, food processing, chemicals, and renewable energy being key subsectors. GDP growth has been positive since 2022, supported by record tourism revenues, rising investment, and ongoing EU-funded infrastructure projects.

Euronext Athens (ATHEX) equities are traded in EUR and settle via Euronext Securities Athens (formerly ATHEXCSD) on a T+2 basis. Retail investors outside Greece can access ATHEX-listed stocks through major European online brokers (e.g. Interactive Brokers, DEGIRO, Saxo Bank) that provide access to European regulated markets. Several large Greek companies also trade on US OTC markets as ADRs or via NYSE/NASDAQ listings. US-listed ETFs provide additional indirect exposure. Greek brokerage accounts are subject to local regulatory oversight by the Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC).

Greece is an EU and Schengen Area member. Non-EU nationals residing legally in Greece may access Greek public healthcare and education. Greece levies a flat 7% tax on foreign-source pension income for qualifying new tax residents under a special regime, and a lump-sum €100,000 annual tax regime is available for high-net-worth individuals relocating their tax domicile to Greece. Digital nomad visas for non-EU remote workers are also available. The official language is Greek; English is widely spoken in business and tourist areas.
