Iceland is a small, high-income Nordic island economy with a nominal GDP of approximately $33 billion. Its economy is heavily driven by tourism, fisheries, aluminium smelting, and renewable energy (geothermal and hydropower). The financial services sector has rebuilt significantly since the 2008 banking crisis, and a growing pharmaceutical/biotech sector is emerging. Iceland is a member of the EEA and EFTA but not the EU, giving it access to the European single market while retaining its own currency and monetary policy. The Nasdaq Iceland exchange is small and relatively illiquid, with around 27 domestic equity listings as of early 2026.

Foreign investors can access Nasdaq Iceland equities through Nasdaq Nordic member brokers and select European online brokers that provide Nordic market access (e.g., Saxo Bank, Nordnet, Degiro for some stocks). US-based retail investors have limited direct access; the main practical route is through Alvotech (ALVO), which is dual-listed on Nasdaq US. Icelandic stocks are quoted in ISK, introducing currency risk. Liquidity on most names outside the OMXI15 index constituents is thin.

Iceland does not offer a golden visa, residency-by-investment, or citizenship-by-investment programme. Investment in property, a company, or a fund does not confer a direct right to Icelandic residency. Standard residency is obtained through employment, study, or family reunification. Citizenship is available after seven years of legal domicile and continuous residence, subject to language requirements and other conditions.

Zugang für ausländische Investoren
Iceland permits EEA/EFTA nationals to live and work freely. Non-EEA nationals must obtain a residence permit through standard immigration routes (employment, family, study). There is no investment-based shortcut to residency. The country offers a high quality of life, universal healthcare, and one of the world's highest HDI scores, but cost of living is among the highest in Europe.
